Teen driver liability insurance rates

Reader question:

I know teen driver liability insurance rates are high, so can I just not get my teen insurance?

Kim

Not an option, Kim.

The single thing that makes parents think twice before allowing their kids to stick the key in the ignition is the high teen driver liability insurance rates. For teenage girls, these rates are exceedingly high, at around 50% more than what your own average rate should be. For boys, it’s even worse, with as much as double the adult rate. This disparity drops off when they’re older, but since you’re the one footing the bill now, it doesn’t do you any good, does it?

There are two reasons, though, why parents should just accept the (lowest) teen driver liability insurance rates they can find, anyhow.

  • First of all, your car insurance company won’t believe that your teenager isn’t driving no matter how much you insist this is the case. If there is a teen in your house, they will have to be on your policy, because on the near certainty that they will drive your car against your wishes, and the possibility that they will get into an accident, your company might not pay your claim.
  • Second of all, your teen needs the experience. The fastest way to low teen driver liability insurance rates is to build a good driving record, and that can help you as well.

Teen car insurance in Houston TX

Reader question”

How come teen car insurance in Houston TX costs so much?

Mary

Glad you asked.

The month after I added my teenager to my car insurance policy, and I received the new quote, I nearly passed out. Teen car insurance in Houston TX is expensive. I could seriously send him to college for this amount, I’m thinking.

Why is it so expensive? According to what they tell me, car accidents are the #1 cause of death among teenagers–which is pretty scary. Teens are overrepresented in serious car accidents, especially ones which cause death or serious injury. On top of that, they just don’t have the experience to do well what those of us who can put on make up and change the radio station and talk on the cell phone while eating a breakfast burrito while navigating I-10 (you shouldn’t do that either, actually) can do.

The way that I was able to get rid of a lot of this excess expense for my teen car insurance in Houston TX was by cracking the whip and just making sure that my son got good grades in school. The company I have, and most others, have a student discount which is for those who get As or Bs in school. And it’s 20% off!

Liability insurance for teen driver

Reader question:

Do I need liability insurance for teen driver?

Carole

Good question.

You need liability insurance for teen driver coverage, because if you get full coverage then you will be paying way too much. This is why when your teen buys their car or you buy it for them, it should be a used car that can be bought all immediately or quickly paid off.

But while you are buying a used car for your teen, don’t sacrifice safety for savings. Teenagers are more at danger than anyone else when it comes to things such as driving, which is why you need safety features such as a stability system, anti-rolling devices, extra airbags, and the like.

While these may cost more initially, most car insurance companies will give you a discount on your liability insurance for teen driver if you have these safety features equipped. In fact, in some states it is required that they discount for things such as airbags and seatbelts, but even in the states where it isn’t, companies usually know what the market wants and do so anyway.

Also check the crash test ratings for any car you buy for your teen so that you can find out how they hold up.
