Just like new drivers, senior drivers also want to get cheaper senior car insurance. Senior car insurance, much like young drivers’ insurance, can be quite expensive, because of the hazards that older motorists carry. Statistics show that drivers, especially those who are over 70 years old, have more risks of getting into serious car accidents than younger motorists.
However, there are ways for older drivers to get themselves insured and keep their vehicles covered, without having to say goodbye to a big chunk of their pension or retirement funds.
1.) Stay alert. Most accidents involving senior drivers usually occur at intersections. Keep your driving record spotless by paying close attention to traffic signs.
2.) Observe the speed limit. Speeding is dangerous. No need for further explanation. However, driving below the speed limit is also quite hazardous, especially when entering or exiting the freeway.
3.) Go ergonomic. Choose a vehicle that provides both style and functionality. Make sure that your car seat will allow you to see at least 10 feet ahead of you, and that seatbelts have a snug yet comfortable fit. Features such as power steering and automatic braking devices will also make driving safer and easier.
4.) Refresh your memory. Touch up on your driving skills by enrolling in refresher courses like the AARP’s “55 Alive” course. Enrolling and successfully completing this eight-hour module will give senior drivers discounts when applying for senior car insurance.
